#19 The Japan-related Web. Part 1: What it could be

Posted by Bill Belew on January 23rd, 2008 in Japan | No Comments

Yesterday we looked at joint projects.

Today we will look at something plain and simple you can do that is truly powerful… assisting others.

It does not require the ability to craft brilliant widgets or contributing countless hours to a project.

It can be something as simple as pointing someone to a link.

That is what Nick at Longcountdown.com did for me.

I wanted to know where I could find a good comment notification plugin and he told me. I told some other bloggers about it, they told others and so on.

You can do the same. But how?

How can we better assist one another?nipponster.gif

And on the other hand how can we let others know when we need assistance?

One thing that might be great for the Japan-related web is a 43things.com for Japan-enthusiasts.

You could list the things you would like to do (like "improve my blog's navigation," or something general like "learn keigo") and others could help you.

What do you think?

Nice Gaijin over at the Jref froum just made a really interesting comment on a thread I started about this series. He said:

…an unmapped and perhaps extensive pre-existing relationship between Japanese-related sites would be the members that maintain a presence on more than one site. Obviously no one has enough time to participate in all sites about Japan, but the few people that do visit multiple sites form a sort of “6 degrees of separation” that links us all to each other. Perhaps there’s a way to harness this hidden network to spark this collaboration you propose.

What do you guys think? Is there some way to harness/form this kind of network and what is the best way to do that?

A 43things.com for Japan would be interesting. I’d love to see what other things people are doing which I haven’t done here yet.
