15 Reasons Why Nintendo’s Wii Will Eat Sony’s PS3 Share of the Pie

Posted by Bill Belew on November 17th, 2006 in Japan, Japanese Products | No Comments

Crazy people are doing what crazy people do…camping out for days and nights in advance to buy a toy….Sony’s PS3.

But there’s a new toy coming that is likely to take a big bite out of Sony’s 70% market share.

Nintendo’s Wii will go on sale on Sunday.

Here are 15 reasons why Wii will win with wild …okay, I can’t think of any other wi starts…abandon against Sony’s PS3Wii.jpg

1. Wii has a remote controller that acts like a Wand. Well, it is a wand. It can swing like a tennis racket, fish, drum, orchestrate, and perhaps even do things magic wands can do…change pumpkins in to carriages and such.

2. Wii’s owners are sticking to its fun-and-games roots. Remember Super Mario?

3. Wii’s owners know that 200 million Game Boy buyers don’t want to kill dragons, drive race cars and fight super dudes from throughout the world.

4. Wii’s owners have some super dudes of their own – Donkey Kong, Kirby and Pokemon.

5. Nintendo DS, with its touch-panel screen is the fastest growing game machine EVER! Take that Sony.

6. Nintendo has a different variety of ‘games’ – caring for virtual pets, studying cooking recipes, doing brain teasers. Did some one say Sudoku?

7. Nintendo appeals to a larger audience – older people, women and other game button challenged people – like me.

8. Wii will expand the market pie, and be the first to take a bite out of it.

9. Wii costs half of the price of PS3 and less than Microsoft’s Xbox.

10. Wii is likely to become the 2nd console of choice for all core gamers. Who wants to play just one type of game when you can play all of them?

11. Wii will have enough units to meet immediate demand and to satisfy those who are waiting for their PS3 to come.

12. Nintendo will make money off its Wii much faster than Sony will off its PS3. Thus Nintendon can put more into Wii upgrades and games sooner than Sony can think of a PS4.

13. Ninentendo makes its own games = more profits. Sony outsources its game making = even longer time to get a return on the PS3.

14. Owning a Wii sounds much cooler than owning a piss3.

15. Nintendo, which means ‘trusting in luck’ is likely to be luckier than PS3. And in the entertainment business, luck plays a much bigger role than many would like to admit.

Wii is going to make some serious inroads in the game market, not by taking Sony’s share, but by increasing the size of the pie and taking that.

Soon, Sony will be eating its piece of the pie heart out.

What do you think?

    1. I can do all of those things (with the exception of the pumpkin example) without Nintendo’s plastic stick.
    2. Yay another Mario game. I’m sooo excited… /sarcasm
    3. I’m sure a lot of them actually do.
    4. See #2.
    5. That has nothing to do with he Wii.
    6. If I wanted to do that, I wouldn’t be playing video games now would I?
    7. Except the majority of gamers are males between the ages of 13 and 30
    8. Your metaphor doesn’t make sense. And that isn’t a reason.
    9. Alright I’ll give you that.
    10. Exactly, second choice, not first.
    11. There were many shortages in the first months of the Wii’s release. In fact, many preorders were not fulfilled in time for the holidays.
    12. And you know this how?
    13. Nintendo actually “makes” very few of their games. They publish many, as does Sony.
    14. No it doesn’t. A lot of my friends own a Wii and when I tell them I own PS3, they get jealous.
    15. Exactly how can something be more likely to be lucky?

I’m sitting at my mom’s house injured and bored and she offers to buy a Wii, but no one has the damn thing. PS3 is cool but I don’t trust a company who had to revise their ps2 motherboard 14 times, and hardly cares to build a network for online play. Sony is chic but it feels like a house of cards. It may be a poor judgment but Nintendo just feels more reliable. They have those little official license tags on everything and the hardware just seems better. I hate the Z button however, why can’t they get that button right, and the new B trigger is a little off. The DS was redesigned so I do hold that against Nintendo a bit. I don’t like the slow, jerky feel of 3D Zelda games. But overall Wii feels cool and it takes pressure off my carpal tunnel problems. I just can’t believe they don’t have any stock. Trying so hard to get one is eventually going to wear me out. I’ll just go back to MAME and PopKart on my computer. Really a console is an impulse buy for me so they need to capitalize on it before I reconsider.

True, PS3 is such a stupid name. It sounds like Piss3! You’re so clever. Calling it ‘Wii’ is much cooler. Wee is lucky, of course.

I look forward to the Nintendo Dudu, as well.

ok that guy who commented about how all these reasons are wrong i think you are a perfect example of 90% of the ps3 owners out there: stupid. shure ill give you the fact that 10 and 11 are stupid reasons so let me substitute some in for you, ok here comes the new # 10: the wii is much smaller and lighter than the ps3 not to mention it fits in and look better with most electronics. #11: its just one word: CHANNELS!!!! those things are frickin amazing you got the internet channel ( the ps3 does have a web browser but the wii is so much more cut out for sufing the internet) then you have the shop channel this is another thing the ps3 has but again the wiis is better because of course nintendo has an amazing library of great old games to choose from. then you got the forecast channel this not only gives you the days for cast and the next days forcast and the current weather, it gives you a 5 day forecast in almost every location( not to mention its fricking fun to spin that globe around with the wiimote and check out the weather everywhere) they actually made weather fun!!! then theres the news channel that lets you go through the news by topic just like a regular newspaper (plus its updated almost every half hour). it also allows you to do a slide show of the news when you just want to skim through it. it shows you news by area too as an added bounus. then theres the new everybody votes channel. this thing may sound stupid but its great. people post things for you to vote on and you cast ur vote and as soon as the voting period is over you get to see the results by overall vote, region and gender. also you can predict what the most popular vote will be and it show you how much you have predicted the popular vote correctly, and it lets you see how much your opinion differs from popular opinion. then theres the photo channel. (ahh the photo channel what wonders will you bestow upon us today) this is amazingly fun. you can edit the photos like draw on them and all sorts of fun stuff, make puzzles out of them , make slideshows and listen to your mp3 files while you watch them, and send photos to friends. this is all made so much better by the fact that the wii uses and SD card these are the most common types of memory cards in your basic camera. and heres even better news they keep making more!!!(their last one came out 3 days ago). and since i had some other thoughts too heres reason # 16:the wii has 2 usb ports in the back imagine what kinds of possibilities that opens up for nintendo to make future acsessories for the wii. i just realized that i forgot the mii channel but you all know about that( boy there shure are lots of channels). reason #17: all the ladies love the wii (thats a fact). by the way all ur friends are just saying they are jealous because they feel sorry for you (what great friends) well ive spent too much time away from my wii and i miss it so i hope that proves it to you that the wii is way better than the ps3, i have plenty more reasons but i got to go play red steel now (that game is awesome)

The Nintendo Wii,is – without a doubt, the console with the worst hardware out of the 7th gen of game consoles. A laughable 730mHZ of CPU, and 230mHz of memory. Its game, Mario is so old and boring now. We’ve been playing it since 1990. The PS3 has a 3.2gHZ CPU. One gigahertz is 1000 megahertz. The person who thought that PS3 sounds like piss3 is a total reo. If you want a good console but don’t wanna pay $1k to 1.2K should get a XBox 360. Saying that 200milion people didn’t wanna kill dragons and race cars is stupid. Even Nintendo knows that, thus they made (or published) a game could Zelda. But of course that has nothing to do with killing dragons, you kill low graphic purple monsters.

The answer shines clear to all, for gaming buy a computer.

Ok, I’m gonna attack both sides of this argument right now. I’m pretty sure you are prefering the console of your choice without ever playing the other beforehand, if so you’re being a hypocryte. I for one own a Wii but have played numerous times the PS3. In my opinion, Wii wins cause I’ve been loyal to Nintendo since 1991(contradicting myself here but give me a chance). Although when it comes down to gameplay and quality, PS3 is the best(although it’s so expensive that I’m quite sure you’re either an idiot or able to let go of 500$ for a freak’n console- I for one am neither). Anyway, on to insulting the 15 reasons…
#3 is wrong, although “You kill low graphic purple monsters” is ENTIRELY arogant, that’s from the original Zelda game when Sony wasn’t even in the gaming market.
#5 is irrelevent but because it is compatable with the Wii, Wii gets points(very small since they did that with the gamecube and game boy advance)
    #10 obvious i think
#12 there’s no way of predicting that
#14 that’s just to make PS3 users even more obnoxiously irritating – entierly out of emotion
#15 “likely to be luckier” is just a stupid statement (oops being opinionated again)
Ok, so I think I’ve annoyed all of you enough.

In 2004-2005 I was taking a class on corporate strategy at Jouchi U. and doing a project on Sony vs. Nintendo game consoles.

If you look into their history it is pretty interesting.

At time it seemed like Nintendo would be better off exiting the console market like Sega had done earlier (they do software-only now). They had only 17% of the market, I believe new-comer x-box had about 10%, and Sony had OVER 70%! We suggested that they do only software for other consoles but keep going with their handhelds which were dominating that market. Of course PSP was set to launch around that time so their handheld market was in trouble too. We got an A on the project.

Fast forward a little and the Nintendo Wii is all the rage. It just goes to show you, university isn’t everything.
Case and point, didn’t the Fedex guy get a “C” on his thesis at Harvard?

alright, its late at night, so im gonna make this quick.
just so ya kno, i own a Wii and i HAVE played a PS3.
sorry for the IM shorthand, but oh wel. . .
Wii is fun and entertaining. Its weak compared to the power of the PS3, duh, but that doesnt matter. Do u really need to see every little facial hair on ur character? or do u just want to enjoy ur time of video games? a PS3 is better if ur into the fine details of the game, but really ur not payin attention to that stuff. ur more worried about whether ur gonna get killed, or drive off the road. u dont need high-end graphics for that. also, the Wii’s controller makes it feel like ur in the game, swing ur arm and u throw a grenade. whats that PS3, oh yea, u press a button, big woop.

    all im sayin is this…
if ur more into the graphics and power side of the games, sure u can waste 300-400 dollars on that Playstation 3.
but if ur into what the game really is about and just enjoyin ur time, go for that Wii. its cheaper, smaller, and with Wii Sports, u might even loose a couple pounds.

well, that was longer than expected but oh well. peace out y’all.
