#14 The Japan-related Web. Part 1: What it could be

Submitted by Bill Belew on Friday, 18 January 2008No Comment

I am making it a point not to use "I" often since this series is about you, but I have to here.

I have to take a moment to say a little bit about why I am NOT writing this series. I am not writing this series for self-promotion.

Of course this series will draw traffic to the sites involved and discussed, but this series is so much bigger than that.

I am not asking for me or anyone else to be put on a pedestal because that will not bring about innovation. What I am calling for is a leaderless decentralized community.

The community will be fueled by a simple ideology: help others, and encourage them to do the same.nipponster.gif

There are no rules of membership for this community, no roster lists, and no superiors to report too. If you help others and encourage them to do the same, you are a member.

"Why should I help others? What's in it for me," you say?

I intend to show later in this series how helping others directly benefits you and your site. In a way it is the most selfish thing you could do.

    Hi All,

I mentioned our discussion over at Jref.com and NiceGaijin asked me a question over there about my Leaderless Decentralised Community comment. Here is the link to conversation.

I cannot take credit for the idea of a decentralised organisation. It is the subject of a great book called The Starfish and the Spider: The Unstoppable Power of Leaderless Organisations. You can read the first chapter of it here

As the webmasters among us probably know, open source software projects have support forums that users go to and freely assist one another with technical problems, etc. Together they build entire software packages (linux is a good example, wordpress too).

This is the type of collaboration I hope will happen on the J-web.

Collaboration is a novel idea and indeed I am all for.

    But, can it be done?

Can we really work together unselfishly?

    I want to think so.

I’m glad you asked that, I was hoping someone would challenge me on that.

Can it be done is a good question and all I can say is we will see.

I don’t want to make people less selfish though. I want to harness the selfishness for good. :)

I think we can all work together selfishly.
After all, if I help you what are you likely to do for me? So I get something from it too.

That’s what I do with DailyJ. I’m probably the most selfish person around ;)
