#12 The Japan-related Web. Part 1: What it is

Posted by Bill Belew on January 16th, 2008 in Japan | Comments Off

So far in this series we have discussed what the Japan-related web is by breaking it down into seven categories and examining them.

In the next part of the series we will be looking at what the Japan-related web could be.

But before we move on to that, let us examine the “tools of production.”

Without becoming too technical let's look at how sites on the J-web are built.

While some sites are made by good old fashioned hand-coding, most are probably running on some type of content management system (CMS). For the non-tech crowd that basically means a “website-in-a-box” software.nipponster.gif

If you examine sites on the J-web (or any site for that matter) you will find that many are running on these programs:

PhpBB and vbulletin for forums; Joomla, Drupal, etc. for web portals; lots of WordPress blogs; hosted blogs like Blogger; wikis.

Yet how many people really know how to run websites (and everyone could stand to learn more)?

How many people, with great stories to tell, give up because the technical aspects are too difficult for them or they do not know how to promote their content?
