The move – to solidify Toyota's position as the leader in eco-friendly vehicles.

Isuzu will build a diesel engine plan in Hokkaido thta will exclusively supply Toyota wit engines that will end up in cars headed for Europe to the tune of 200,000 units each year starting in 2012.

Now, Toyota wants to challenge Honda Motor Co. which plans to introduce clean diesel passenger cars in Japan and the United States as early as 2009.

Toyota loses nothing by outsourcing to Isuzu. Toyota owns a 5.9% stake in the company.

Toyota already sells 400-500,000 diesel vehicles in Europe.
