Toyota Motor Corp and Electricite de France (EDF) have reached an agreement to test prototype plug-in hybrid vehicles and develop an electricity infrastructure to support the plug-ins.

There are already some 200 electric charging stations in France. The goal, of course, is to expand the network throughout Europe.

The car nickel-hydrogen batteries can be charged in about one hour at a cost of

20yen and run for about 10km on a battery charge alone….thus lowering fueledf.jpg costs by 30% when compared to conventional hybrids.

Toyota received the first government permission among carmakers in Japan to test the plug-in hybrid on public roads.

Tokyo and EDF are hoping the vehicles will be commercially launched as early as 2010.

Would you like to drive an electric vehicle?

BTW…how is electricity generated at electric stations?
