Japan’s Three Strategic Seasons for Notebook Sales
Japan has three strategic seasons for selling its notebooks. Japan also has three top notebook sellers – Toshiba, Fujitsu and NEC.
The seasons are spring, summer and fall.
Each year, those seasons come earlier. Fall releases are in October. This year, they could be seen in August.
Spring sales happen in time for Japan’s new school year, which begins in April. This year, the big three notebook makers are displaying next year’s stuff already…in time for Christmas, or year end giving and to pluck up sales.
Early release is an attempt to gain market share, to get a jump on the other guy.
Spring season is unique in that the focus is on entry-level models = cheaper by the unit. Market share means more profits.
The problem with releasing products early…older models don’t have enough time to run their course and make the money they might have.
I suppose if leave the notebook makers alone, they’ll go full circle and spring will happen in spring again.
