Oscar nominated Kikuchi Rinko gave a news conference to promote the movie ‘Babel’ which will be release in Japan on April 28th.

Kikuchi said, “Our director (Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu) was really passionate, treated us like a family and was loving. He really wanted us to make a wonderful film.”

The director called ‘Babel’ “a film speaking the language of emotion.”

Then went on, “It was a fantastic experience. The most fascinating thing doing the film was that we were very close to the ‘Babel’ subject matter. I don’t speak Japanese. I don’t speak sign language Japanese. Even so, although we had translators, it was not about words. We communicated sometimes with the eyes, with body language, with smiles, just holding hands, feeling each other. That’s when I realized that the problem is not words, it’s about breaking the ideas we have. We have to break those barriers. It was a fantastic human experience, the best part of the trip.”

He doesn’t speak Japanese, or sign in Japanese….communicating with eyes, body language, smiles…blah, blah, blah.

If I had a nickle for everyone of my teachers in Japan who didn’t want to study Japanese because they could already ‘communicate’ I wouldn’t need to be doing these posts for a living.

The other day I met a man who had a deaf and mute daughter. She knew signing…he did not. How DO they communicate? He said, it was by eyes, body language, smiles and touching.

I don’t think so.

How important is it to know the language of communication to, well, communicate?
