How NOT To Build Good Relations Between Japan and the United States

When I was in the Navy and stationed in Japan, it seemed that every so often sailors being sailor, inexcusable nonetheless, would have dumb attacks and do something to the Japanese locals that would cause embarrassment and apologies, not to mention some arrests.

A lot of the wrongdoing was centered in Okinawa, but not exclusively.princeton in sasebo japan

Yesterday the Mainichi News reported that an American sailor was arrested from attempting to murder his Japanese girlfriend. Thank goodness he didn’t succeed.

The attempt took place at 3:30am in Sasebo, Nagasaki…not far from the city of Nagasaki.

The sailor and the Japanese woman had been dating for about a week…instead of breaking it off like normal people, the guy tried to cut off the relationship – literally – with a knife.

The crime led to the Commander of US Naval Forces in Japan, who happened to be in Sasebo at the time to visit the Mayor of the city and pledge cooperation in the investigation.

The majority of the Navy were always totally embarrassed when sailors from among our ranks did something as stupid as this and sometimes worse.

But, where there are people, boys and girls, love and hate, hurt feelings and otherwise, unfortunately, there is bound to be crime.

What do you think?
