Gay, Lesbian Market is $50 billion ‘Niche’

It is thought that there are about 2.74 million people in Japan who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender (LGBT)

That many people have an estimated combined purchasing power of about 6.64 trillion yen – about what Japan spends in booze each year.

The LGBT segment is also willing to spend that money on lifestyle related items from fashion to art to travel.

One reason for this, says one market researcher, Japanse LGBTs cannot get married, and thus have more disposable income.lgbt.japan.jpg

Straight people in Japan spend on average 36,000 yen a year on cosmetics. LGBTs spend 46,000 yen.

Straight people spend 65,000 yen on overseas travel each year while their queer counterparts spend 82,000.

Niches…I heard not long ago that there was a fellow making web sites for left handed quilters in the United States at $1,000 a pop.

It is estimated that there are more then 10,000 left-handed quilters in the United States. 10,000 x $1,000.

Yup, businesses can make it these days if they can find, appeal to, and satisfy the right niche.
