Are there gyms nearby when teaching ESL in Japan?

Strange question perhaps. But, I don’t think so.

The gym is a great respite after spending 4, 5, 6 hours in front of stammering students all day.

I can remember when a racquetball court was put in our city (Niigata) not a mile or so from where I was teaching. This was before I set up my own school. I was thrilled to know I could play, lift, sweat, and, yup, watch pretty Japanese girls do aerobic exercise at all hours of the day.

The weights in Japan are just as heavy as they are in any other country. The treadmills spin in kilometers per hour and so on. But, the workout is the same.

They gyms are also a great place to meet people, practice Japanese and generally interact with others who have no interest in speaking English.

Given the opportunity… go to the gym.
