Japan’s first supermodel, Sayoko Yamaguchi, died this month.

Until Riyo Mori took the Miss Universe crown this year, Japan hasn’t been known for dazzling beauties, long legged, starving….um…supermodels.

Japan’s latest supermodel, Yuri Ebihara, pretty much fits the ‘cutsie’ stereotype of the Japanese girl. Ebihara is done and Maki Nishiyama is taking the reins.

Yamaguchi appeared at Paris Fashion Week for the 1st time in 1972 at the age of 22.

She went on to model for Kenzo Takada, Issei Miyake and Kansai Yamamoto.

In 1977, Newsweek magazine named her one of the top six models in the world.

She died about a week ago of acute pneumonia at the age of 57.

It wasn’t reported until today.

So much for being a pioneer in the Japanese women’s world of fashion, eh?

How come the Ebiharas and Nishiyamas didn’t make a big deal out of it?
