Japanese Woman Lives with Dead Mother’s Body for 8 Months
It’s normally just 40 days…and only the ashes.
When a Japanese person dies, the body is taken home for a wake. The body is laid in a simple pine box with a small plastic window at the top so the viewers can be sure it is your loved one who is dead in there.
The wake usually lasts one night, unless, however, grandpa died on the day before tomobiki…(take a friend)…then you have to wait an extra day. You can’t burn a person on this Buddhist day because it would be bad luck.![]()
A woman in Sendai, apparently couldn’t or didn’t read the Buddhist calendar.
The 43-year old woman said she found her mother dead under a futon (that would be the kakibuton, the kind you cover up with, not the American style bed-looking thingy.)
The woman said, “I didn’t know what to do.”
So, she left mom there…for eight months.
When another resident in the same apartment complex noticed the smell, she called the police. They came and told the woman what to do.
This story gives a whole new meaning to the ‘not knowing how to let go of a loved one,’ phrase, doesn’t it?
