Japanese Models Show Off Sony’s New Type P – Pocket Size PC
A couple of models can be seen showing off Sony’s new Type P – Pocket Size PC.
Now, if you can keep your eyes on the PCs….
The VAIO type P is a 634-gram (1.5 lbs) (width:245mm, depth:120mm, thickness:19.8mm) computer for the Japanese market.
The expected price for the consumer model is 100,000 yen. ($1100ish)
“VAIO type P is not a netbook. We plan to create a new niche and achieve 100% market share.”
Netbooks, or mini laptop computers account for about 20% of the personal computer market in Japan and Taiwanese makers have made inroads.
“We will release type P in 33 countries in North America and Europe as well as Russia and China, in collaboration with regional telecommunication services.”
Type P for the Japanese market is equipped with NTT DoCoMo’s high speed Internet connection service module sers can access the Internet at 7.2Mbps download speed.
The type P can be carried like a mobile phone with broadband connection. Makes texting a lot easier, eh?.
The consumer mode has:
1. 8-inch ultra-wide monitor (1600×768 resolution), ]
2. Intel Atom Z520 CPU as well as 60G byte hard disk and on-board 2G RAM.
3. Windows Vista Home Basic. (Guess, I am not interested)
4. Equipped with IEEE802.11b/g/n, NTT DoCoMo’s FOMA High Speed WAN connection
5. Bluetooth
6. GPS function is available on VGN-P80H/W and corporate models.
7. Battery lasts 4.5 hours.
Now you can put your eyes back where they were.
So, um, where do they put the Sony Chip?

Netbook’s success can be derived to its affordability. Although there is the sheer convenience of it, the real reason people prefer to purchase a netbook is because it’s so cheap as an alternative to a laptop, and they are willing to forgo some specs. What’ll be the pocket-pcs price range? If they don’t keep it affordable, Sony could repeat its Betamax history.
