Floor Cleaning Robot Makes Debut in Japan

Submitted by Bill Belew on Thursday, 4 December 2008No Comment

Yesterday I wrote about Motoman  the Robot Cook, Made in Japan.

I kind of wondered out loud (in print anyway) if Motoman could wash the dishes, too. I don’t know the answer to that, but I do know that Japan has a robot that can  clean floors in office buildings.

But, can it stick a broom up you know where while it does it and answer the phone, too?

Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd and Sumitomo Corp  jointly developed an unmanned floor cleaning robot. His name is  The Cleaning Robot. They fired the guy who spent the weekend thinking up that name I hope.
TCR can  move between floors of the office building using elevators and cleans the floors. But, is he nice to the elevator girls?

Safety was enhanced by employing a laser-type range sensor to detect obstacles and improving the signal processing program.

The robot moves between floors by talking via light to the elevator. It has a camera to record its work.

Fuji Heavy is going after the “Service Robot Market Creation Assistance Project” by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

Somebody get a broom.
