AIG Spa Retreat on the Backside of Japan

Submitted by Bill Belew on Wednesday, 8 October 2008No Comment

I loved the trips to the spa in Japan. The water was so hot you could barely stand it…but you could. Literally, a big toe, then the foot, up to the ankle…slowly, slowly…Ahh!!!! It was great. Loved the experience…until Congress, not to mention the 300 million people who’s $85 billion I was partially wasting all started yelling at me at the same time.

What in the world is American International Group’s (AIG) thinking? Wasting…the key word is wasting…$440 thousand on a week long spa retreat for its execs? Don’t they know they could do it for about half that price and get a much better experience if they were to visit an onsen on the Japan sea in Niigata, Japan?

AIG’s financial products manager is receiving $1 million a month in consulting fees - How to cause your multibillion company to nearly collapse - is the title. Do people really pay him to tell them how to destroy their company?

A former CEO is receiving a $5 million performance bonus. How much would he have received had he done a good job!!??

$440K at the retreat - $200K for rooms, $150K for meals and $23K for the spa. What!? They slept suspended in air on feather soft air bubbles and ate food prepared by angels? And we are paying for this?

Congress is outraged…but, dang it, the money was still spent.

“‘Less than a week after the taxpayers rescued AIG, company executives could be found wining and dining at one of the most exclusive resorts in the nation,’ Waxman said in kicking off an angry hearing of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. ‘We will ask whether any of this makes sense.’”

Excuse me?! They are going to ask what? if what makes sense? If Congress giving them the money in the first place makes sense?!

What a great country we live in, eh Wall Street? You can squander billions of dollars and America will give you more to lose. That bailout/rescue package to reinstill confidence in the market? Did anybody else see the DOW continue to tank?

GIVE ME MONEY BACK!!!!!

Earlier today, AIG announced an important policy change – one that we wanted to be sure you knew about.

A short time ago, our Chairman and CEO Ed Liddy said that he has ordered the immediate cancellation of all outside meetings, conferences, and recognition events across AIG, except those that are required by law or that are deemed absolutely critical to sustain our ongoing business needs.

Given AIG’s commitment to our customers, business partners, regulators, and American taxpayers, coupled with the new and very different challenges our company now faces, we take these responsibilities extremely seriously. Their trust is critical to our success. We recognize the need to be sensitive about all company expenditures.

As we move forward, we will continue our focus our efforts to pay back the $85 billion loan from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York as quickly as possible.

We appreciate your blog’s efforts to share this information with your readers.

    Best,

    AIG Blog Relations
