Wallet Phone from Japan Coming to U.S.

Japan leads the world in 3G cell phone proliferation. The country has 104 million 3G handsets in use. The population of Japan is only 120 million.

One of the most popular mobile technologies is the “wallet phone.”

The technology relies on a tiny computer chip called FeliCa, embedded in each cellphone, which communicates with a reader device at stores, train stations and vending machines for cashless payments.

And Japan wants to bring the technology abroad. 7-11? Use your cell phone. Movie tix? - Use your cell phone? Groceries? - use your cell phone to pay for it. Vending machine?- use your cell phone

Japan also wants to promote overseas wireless technology - GSM, or Global System for Mobile communications, which allows the same phone to be used in most countries.

Japan’s cell phones deliver high-speed internet, digital TV broadcasts and video downloads.

Is iPhone the leader? Not a chance. Still chasing Japanese technology as Japan works on 4G models.
