Superconducting Motor for Electric Car by Sumitomo

by BBelew57 on June 19th, 2008

Sumitomo Electric Industries has a new prototype electric vehicle.

It is driven by a superconducting motor - the first ever of its kind.

The world will get to see one at the G8 Summit in Toyako, Hokkaido from June 19.

Sumitomo wants everyone to know that high-temperature superconductivity technology is also an option for electric motors in vehicles.

Electric motors usually have a low current and high voltage which translates into low torque. Sumitomo is proposing a superconducting coil with very high current, low voltage and fewer turns producing a higher torque.

WARNING! WARNING! WARNING!

Don't touch the engine to see if it's warm.
