Takuya Hikichi is a Japanese who came to America to live and work. He's settled in the Las Vegas area and I just missed meeting him in person when I was in Vegas for the 2007 Blogger Convention. You can find him at www.asktak.com
I asked Tak if he would guest blog for me.
Here's what he sent -

Adjusting to America means learning what American's like to talk about and learning what they do NOT like to talk about.
To give you an example, in Japan, people openly talk about their weight.
A greeting might go like this "How have you been? Oh, have you've gained a little weight?"
But, when I came to America, I didn't watch our for exchanges like that and I had to be careful when talking with friends like that.![]()
Instead of saying, "Hey you look great though you seemed to have put on some weight...." I had to come up with something else.
It's bad to talk about weight here... A real no no.
Obesity and Americans -- a very sensitive issue that people in Japan just can't comprehend.

Yeah, Tak, indeed. Try saying they look like they LOST a few pounds. That line works. And, thanks for guest blogging!

I attended my brother-in-law's citizenship ceremony last summer, and that was exactly the topic of the keynote speaker! The speaker reminisced of calling a girl "fat" in college. He could not understand why his compliment made her mad.
