Are there performance reviews when teaching ESL in Japan?
We didn’t do this as often as we should have at my school. And, though I have heard of such activity, I don’t know anywhere that it was practiced regularly.
Classroom evaluations are/were sometimes conducted and with that feedback an instructor’s performance could be evaluated.
Students talk. Students also talk with their feet. If students are signing up for a particular instructor, chances are that instructor is good. If students are faithful in their attendance to an instructor’s class, same.
I knew instructors who were happy when nobody showed up for their classes. They were going to get paid for doing nothing.
However, if students fail to show up enough, sooner or later that instructor will be doing nothing except packing to go home.
