#11 The Japan-related Web. Part 1: What it is

Of all the categories of the Japan-related web that we have scrutinised, e-commerce is one that I had qualms with. (that is mainly because these sites do not have any content).

But they have been included because Japan-related e-commerce is the fuel that feeds the J-web.

How so?

No matter what form of advertisements one uses on a Japan-related site (banners, affiliate links, etc.) the actual advertisers are likely going to be Japan-related.

Even Google AdSense will probably display ads from Japan-related advertisers (based on your website's text).

Since your advertisers are Japan-related e-commerce sites your revenue depends on them (and their revenue depends on you).

So what kinds of e-commerce sites are out there?

What affiliate programs do they have and do J-sites know how to effectively use them?

Here are some common forms of advertisement I see on Japan-related sites:

http://jlist.com (goods from Japan. affiliate program)

http://meta4-group.com (personals/matchmaking through their WorldFriendsNetwork. they give you your own personals network for your site. Think J-site name + "friens." They are everywhere)

- Hotels & Travel services. There are a number of advertisers out there. http://Asiarooms.com is an example.

Japan-related ecommerce sites with affiliate programs. There are too many to list. One that comes to mind is
http://YesAsia.com

What others can you think of? Have you used any? What has been your experience with them?

Hi all. We're having a discussion about what advertising solutions are available to J-sites. Be sure to chime in and share about your experiences with ads and your favourites! [Read More]

I've tried PayPerPost and TextLinkAds. The first was terrible for Japan-related stuff, and the second wasn't much better. I made some money through both, but had to scrap them to abide by Google's new policies on "paid links".

My blog is still new, so I don't know if I can add anything of value here. The only thing that has made me any money (and not too much of it) is Google Adsense. I have jlist links up but I haven't made any sales.

Thanks for including the J-List affiliate system. I think it's working well for our affiliates. Certainly we get a ton of people defecting from other programs, both anime related and product related. Very transparent, and we host all our own graphics so there's not even any bandwidth cost to you.

You're welcome Peter
Keep up the good work!

@ Thomas,
In your case, maybe since your site is geared toward foreigners in Japan (more than people interested in Japan) there is not as much interest in products like Japanese snacks, etc. People living in Japan can pick those up at the convenience store.

I think those products sell well for sites with a lot of visitors located outside of Japan. But I'm no expert on that.
