Question # 47 - What kind of time commitment do I need to make to teach ESL in Japan?
The time commitment largely depends on what the ESL teacher wants the receiving school to do for them.
Return ticket, furnished apartment, higher (relatively) salary, training…be prepared to give a longer commitment…2 yearsish.
When we jumped through all the hoops to get a working visa for our teachers, we required two years.
When we took a teacher ‘off the street’ we got what we found and kept them for as long as we could.
We seldom hired teachers already in Japan for the reason that we could not get a commitment from them.
I feel it takes time for a teacher/person to get used to the students, the environment. A couple of years are not too much to ask.
Working holiday teachers, teachers on other types of visas - student, missionary – we assigned students on a contract basis…no long term commitment.
If a school or the government is getting you a visa, think 2 years.
