The phones are build with the world's most popular GSM standard.
NTT DoCoMo is also making their charges/fees more transparent.

In the past sales agents sold handsets at very low prices made possible because phone carriers paid high sales promotion fees. Then the companies got their
money back by charging high service rates.
Meanwhile - Emobile says it will offer the "world's most advanced" flat-rate mobile data service at 7.2mb/sec downloads, double its current speed.
Emobile is new to Japan's competitive wireless market, the first new service introduced in Japan in 13 years.
