Sony Prepares to Take On iPods, iTunes
Sony Corp. is preparing to take on Apple and its iPods and iTunes by producing its own movie download service.
Music and video downloading is already available through existing networks, but Sony thinks they can make a business out of it.
Last week, Sony unveiled a new Walkman video player that comes with Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Media Player 11 and is capable of managing digital libraries in
LCD-mounted players compatible with MPEG-4 encoded video and AVC, are already available in Japan.
Sony will phase out its struggling Connect digital music store and offer a new breed of digital media players that can play more formats.
Sony also said it will shift emphasis to other network services…especially for users of its PS game consoles.
Somebody, of course, needs to challenge Apple. It's the only way the consumer can win.
