American Carriers are not the only ones wanting more routes to China.
5 US Airlines Win New Flight Routes to China
Tokyo's other airport - Haneda, began operating flights to Shanghai's Hongqiao Airport today.
The route is meant to give faster access to downtown areas than between Narita (an hour outside of Tokyo) and Pudong (an hour outside of Shanghai).
There will be four roundtrip flights per day, operated by:
1. Japan Airlines,
2. All Nippon Airways,
3. China Eastern Airlines
4. Shanghai Airlines
Hongqiao in Shanghai and Haneda in Tokyo are normally used for domestic flights, though there are also eight daily flights to South Korea's Gimbo airport from
Haneda.
South Korea's Gimbo is closer to Seoul's downtown core.
The service was agreed upon last year.
The inaugural flight coincided with the 35th anniversary of the signing of a joint statement normalizing diplomatic relations between China and Japan.
