Moderate, Veteran Fukuda Wins Vote, to become Japan’s New PM
Moderate and veteran Yasuo Fukuda easily beat manga reading Aso to become president of Japan's Liberral Democratic Party.
Thus he is assured of becoming the new prime minister of Japan in a Diet vote later this week.
Fukuda got 63% of the votes (330-197). Taro Aso was the other candidate.
Fukuda has vowed to:
1. fight against terrorism
2. improve relations with Asia![]()
3. address inequalities
4. rebuild the popularity of the LDP
The Diet will vote on Tuesday, but since the LDP has a majority in the lower house, it is guaranteed that Fukuda will win.
Some of Fukuda's key policies:
1. further engage North Korea diplomatically
2. push for extension of Japan's naval mission in support of U.S.-led forces in Afghanistan
3. give aid to rural regions left behind by the economic recovery.
