Toyota, Isuzu Will Develop Diesel Engines

by BBelew57 on August 24th, 2007

Toyota Motor Corp and its Japanese truckmaking partner Isuzu Motors Ltd will develop and produce small diesel engines for the Euopean market.

Isuzu has a great reputation for diesels and the world's best automaker, Toyota, does everything well.

The two companies will produce 1.6 liter diesel engines

for use in Toyota cars sold in Europe starting in 2012.toyota.isuzu.jpg

Diesels are known for good mileage and being cleaner than their gasoline counterparts. The global warming followers, and that is everyone in Europe, will scarf these things right up.

Working together with Isuzu will allow Toyota to remain focused on improving its hybrid technology and still compete with Honda Motor Co.

Toyota owns a 5.9% stake in Isuzu, having formed  the alliance after General Motors Corp dissolved its tie-up with Isuzu in April of last year.

Nearly 20 years ago, I drove a 1.0 liter three-cylinder diesel in Japan that got 55mpg in the city and everywhere else. I can't help but think that the diesels do much better now.

And with Toyota and Isuzu working together on them…by 2012…much much better.

Would you mind having a diesel car?
