Japanese beach volleyball player and part-time pin-up girl, Miwa Asao has set off the newest craze in Japan.
The 'fairy on the beach' who doesn't like being called a 'fairy' (who would?) is juggling her ambitions to reach the Beijing Olympics with being a fashion model and televison personality.
Just 21-years old, she is still mature enough that some 20,000 copies of a book with racy photos have been sold for 1995 yen each ($17.40) and those
editions with her signature for 10 times that.Asao thinks that her suntan makes her unqualified to be referred to as a 'fairy' because of its immaculate image.
In a recent competition, some 68 media companies covered the promising star.
She and beach volley ball partner, Takemi Nisibori finished in their 'regular third place.'
Asao is 172cm (5'7") tall...tall for a Japanese.
Whether she makes it to the 2008 Summer Games or not, Asao has already done something few can do in Japan...start a craze.
Does anybody remember when Frank Shorter won the marathon way back when? It started the marathon boom in the United States.
Miwa Asao may be doing the same for a different sport in Japan.
