India to Become Suzuki Motors Export Base
Suzuki Motor Corp and other carmakers are positioning India as a base for exporting to Europe.
Japanese autopart makers are rushing to set up manufacturing facilities to supply the car makers.
If car parts can be manufactured inside India, the carmakers can be more competitive pricewise while still maintaining quality.
Suzuki, the local leader, as well as Honda Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corp. have production facilities in
India.
The trend is being driven by exports. Suzuki shipped small vehicles made in India to Indonesia and the Philippines. Next year, Suzuki wants to export 100,000 1-liter units to Europe.
Nissan partnering with Renault SA and a local firm will begin operations in 2009 in Chennai.
Good strategy by Japan's car makers, eh?
