Gunfire Accepted as Work Hazard
A 35-year old fisherman was killed by gunfire from a Russian patrol boat near Kaigara Islan, one of the islands in the Northern territories while he was fishing in the area.
The local Kushiro Labor Standards Inspection Office designated the fisherman's death a government work-related accident resulting in his bereaved family receiving money in a compensation pension…albeit, one year after the fact.
The four nothernmost islands off the top of Hokkaid Island, Japan's
big island to the north have been disputed ever since the end of the war.
Russia will not give the islands back and Japan says the islands belong to them.
Imagine having a country two times the next biggest country in the world and still not wanting to give up a couple of islands that a B-star actor in Hollywood or a bench sitter in the NBA could buy.
The islands are no where…but, there are fish. And Russia doesn't want to give up the rights to whatever money they can earn from catches there.
It's always about money, isn't it?
