Buddha Gets a Bath

I have read about this kind of thing in the Bible….gods made of wood and stone not being able to take care of themselves and such.

I guess it's true.

The giant Buddha at Nara's Todaiji Temple needed a bath. How that was determined I don't want to know.

BEFORE he got his bath, however, a ceremony was performed to remove the Buddha's soul. Uh, and they put his soul where during the cleaning? I once had Buddha in the back seat of my car (no kidding). I'll tell that story some other time.

The more I think about this the more confused I

become. Don't we usually take off our clothes and clean what's inside? Rushanabutsu Buddha needed the inside taken off in order to clean the outside.

Next 200 monks and Buddhist followers dressed up in white clothing and began the cleaning.

Okay, I gotta ask. Isn't God supposed to clothe the believers with white?

A year's worth of dust was removed from the Buddha's knees and feet with brushes and dusters.

After which, the cleaners got on platforms suspended from the ceiling to clean the head.

Help me out here, seriously. Shouldn't the head have gone first?

But then, what do I know? The Buddha has everything backwards anyway, why not?

I think I'll stick with a God who does NOT need a bath and can cleanse me.
