Japan’s Two Most Famous Comic Book Artists

by BBelew57 on June 7th, 2007

This is a toughy, considering Japan is a land of comic books, still read by adults, businessmen, and kids.

I asked a student why Japanese men don't give up comic books? Isn't it considered childish?

She asked me why I still eat sweets. Isn't that childish?  Different culture, different hang ups.

Two comic book artists stand out - japan.regions.gif

Tezuka Osamu (1928-89) The creator of Astro Boy, a brave and kind-hearted robot boy. The other day, my wife and I were driving around in San Francisco and we saw a sign advertising an Astro Boy exhibition coming to the Asian Museum. My wife, Chinese, "I know him!"

For a long time, the Chinese didn't know who Snoopy was, but they knew Astro Boy.

Hasegawa Machiko (1920-92) The creator of Sazaesan, a housewife series that gives a comic look into a three-generation family. It also appears in book form and became a popular TV program.
