Japan’s 3 Self-Defense Forces

by BBelew57 on May 29th, 2007

What if Japan did want to go to war? Could they? Would they win? How much money is spent on their 'self-defense forces'? Is it a lot?

China and Korea, mainly, worry about Japan and whether the country is harboring any expansionist ideas. Those two countries have a right to worry. They have been hurt by Japan before.

It's reasonable for those two countries to keep an eye on Japan's military spending.

Japan has three branches to its self-defense force. They are labeled self-defense because Japan, in its constiution, has pledged to be non-agressive and only maintains sufficient military interests to protect itself from neighboring countries.

The three self defense forces are:japan.map.gif

1. The Maritime Self-Defense Force (Navy)

2. The Ground Self-Defense Force (Army)

3. The Air Self-Defense Force (Air Force)

Whenever, Japan is called on to pitch in in international conflicts, think Iraq, Japan can only help with humanitarian and recovery assistance becasue the Self-defense forces are not an "army" and are not permitted to go into combat.

Does Japan spend a lot on its military?

The country spends around $40 billion, 4th in the world behind the United States which can spend ten times that, Russia which spends about 50% more and China which spends a little more.

Could Japan defend itself if necessary? Absolutely.

Could the country pick a fight? Let's hope we never find out.
