A 14 year old is hardly a child. I’m not sure when society at large (at least in most Western “civilized” nations) decided to needlessly coddle and baby young adults. It wasn’t very long ago that when you were physically able to do something—dig ditches, lay bricks, milk cows, fight in wars, have children—that’s what you did. I was 6′ tall when I was 13, and more than capable (and willing) to pull my weight, just as all the countless millions did before me prior to the 20th Century who built the foundations of the world we live in today, but was denied the right to do so because I was a child. Treat someone like a child, and they will behave as a child. Give them responsibilities in addition to their education and give them the right to choose for themselves. We live longer today, thanks to modern diets and medicines, so why not take full advantage of that simple fact and put people to work as soon as they are able? Certainly continue with making education mandatory until age 16/17, but why not give the a job while they’re at it? It’s not like we would be denying them education or forcing them to work in coal mines or sweat shops with inadequate safety measures. Give them jobs and build the economy. Stop treating them as “kids”. They’re not, and we all know it. The 14 yr old in question here was clearly pursuing what her adult hormones were telling her to do—something perfectly natural, by the way, when puberty hits: “You’re a woman now (read: not an infant). Go procreate.” Did the teacher take advantage of the girl? More than likely. But he wouldn’t have had to if she had been raised in a society where people don’t shy away from nature. She would have walked in (or away) with eyes wide open.
