Anything and everything, including copyrighted material, that appeared on Japanese television was finding its way on Youtube until finally the Japanese Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers (JASRAC) had had enough.
Youtube finally removed all the Japanese uploads in response.
Then...the negotiations began. The following is what will be done...but no decision as to when.
1. Youtube has agreed to a Japanese Language Warning. Wow! Now, that will stop the people for sure.
2. Youtube has agree to launch an automated system to scan and identify copyrighted uploads. This one has merit.
3. Youtube is planning on a revenue sharing scheme that will encourage users to register their real personal data. This one, too, will discourage users from uploading material that is not their own.
Why is Youtube negotiating with JASRAC in the firstplace?
One third of Youtube's global traffic is generated in Japan....that's why.
Both Youtube and the Japanese media have something to gain by working out a deal no matter how long it takes to come by.
