Top Ten Selling Vehicles of ‘06
Six of the top ten selling cars in Japan were mini-cars, vehicles with a 660cc-sized engine or smaller.
The number one selling car was Suzuki Motor Corp's Wagon R minicar…the third year in a row.
Daihatsu Motor Co's Move was number two and Toyota Corolla was third, for the third year in the row.![]()
Toyota Corolla was the leading 'full-sized' car for the fourth straight year.
Toyota's Vitz and Honda Motor Co's Fit also made the top ten.![]()
Toyota and Daihatsu each had three cars in the top ten. Honda and Suzuki had two each. Nissan had none.
The mini-cars made up 35% of the overall market share in car sales of 5,739,506 vehicles, down 1.9% from '05.
I owned a Daihatsu 3-cylinder diesel when I first went to Japan more than 20 years ago. Diesl fuel was $2.30/gal then when gasoline was $3.50.
I got more than 55 miles to the gallon…and that was 20 years ago.
Japanese mini-cars are indeed economical and fit well in the narrow streets. The small framed Japanese have no trouble riding in them as well.
The cars would never make it in the states because Americans are just too big.
What do you think?
