Dell Inc. has recalled 4.1 million notebook computer batteries...all of which were made by Sony Corp.
Dell is the world's largest PC maker. It is also the largest recall in Dell's 22 year history.
The cost estimates to Sony range from $85-$430 million.
Sony's reaction - "Bummer."
Sony's battery operations account for only 3 percent of Sony's total electronics sales and 6% of the company's operating profits.
Dell says the lithium-ion batteries could smoke and catch fire. My PC can't do that.
It is thought that the overheating problem is specific to Dell.
Sony also supplies batteries used in laptops made by HP, Apple and Lenovo.
Let me see...Hewlett-Packard doesn't have a problem with Sony batteries.
Apple doesn't have a problem with Sony batteries.
Lenovo doesn't have a problem with Sony batteries.
Dell has a problem with Sony batteries.
Where does it sound like the problem is to you?
Hmmm...something tells me this is not going to go away quietly.
What do you think?

Definitely a blow to Dell's image...and Sony of course. The last battery recall I remember was a couple of years ago by Compaq. It's definitely interesting that only Dell batteries have suffered - a manufacturing issue...or something else entirely?
