Japan Bans US Rice Imports

Bayer CropScience AG told the US Dept. of Agriculture and the US Food and Drug Administration that it found traces of an herbicide-tolerant rice that was field-tested between '98 and '01.

The samples were found in commercial long-grain rice.

Japan responded to this discovery by banning imports of long-grain rice from the US, despite the fact that both agencies said there were no human health, food safety or environmental concerns connected to the rice variety.

Still, Japan would have nothing of it. The doubt had been cast.

When beef turned up tainted - Japan responded with a ban.

when mad cow disease occured in a few cattle in the States - Japan responded with a ban.

Is there any surprise that Japan would respond with a ban on rice, too? I am not surprised.

Japan demands quality, attention to detail, has high standards. There's nothing wrong with that.

What do you think?

Seeing is how rice is a major consumable product in Japan will this hurt their economy and send rice prices up. Well they will have to find a way to get on like they always do i guess.

i am not suprised either. not that it wouldn't be a serious problem here, but japan has a larger population in a smaller area and the impact that something like this would have would hit harder and faster. good to be safe.

I'm not surprised either, but the overreaction from the Japanese government needs to be discussed further.

Certain developed countries still seem to be under the spell of fear mongers (scientists and their accomplices in the mainstream media) who continue to spread misinformation about genetically-modified crops. It is plain irresponsible to enact bans on foodstuffs because of some anti-GM sentiment on the behalf of the world scientific community.

GM foods are the way of the future and will be the next technological breakthrough needed to feed the next generation of developing countries. It's time for people to wake up to this fact and stop living in baseless fear of globalization, global warming, etc.

I'm not a paid shill for GM products. In fact, I'm a well-educated libertarian who happens to help run RealFootball365.com, a young American football blog for the educated fan.

I found this entertaining blog on a post on our forums. There you can find my weekly Business and World News post from The Economist. You are welcome to discuss football or any world events there.
