Bayer CropScience AG told the US Dept. of Agriculture and the US Food and Drug Administration that it found traces of an herbicide-tolerant rice that was field-tested between '98 and '01.
The samples were found in commercial long-grain rice.
Japan responded to this discovery by banning imports of long-grain rice from the US, despite the fact that both agencies said there were no human health, food safety or environmental concerns connected to the rice variety.
Still, Japan would have nothing of it. The doubt had been cast.
When beef turned up tainted - Japan responded with a ban.
when mad cow disease occured in a few cattle in the States - Japan responded with a ban.
Is there any surprise that Japan would respond with a ban on rice, too? I am not surprised.
Japan demands quality, attention to detail, has high standards. There's nothing wrong with that.
What do you think?

Seeing is how rice is a major consumable product in Japan will this hurt their economy and send rice prices up. Well they will have to find a way to get on like they always do i guess.
